Aston Villa told exactly what to expect as Europa League ‘risk’ predicted vs Lille – Exclusive
Aston Villa are looking to get back to winning ways as they face Lille in the Europa League.
Villa’s welcome break from league action continues as they travel to France, after suffering successive defeats against Wolves and Chelsea in recent weeks.
Unai Emery’s side are one of the favourites to go on and lift the Europa League come May, but they face a stern test in Lille, who took Aston Villa to a dramatic penalty shootout in the UEFA Conference League just under two years ago.
Looking ahead to Thursday’s first leg at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Villa News spoke to commentator and journalist, Eskender Tamrat, to get the lowdown on Les Dogues.
Lille fans frustrated after mixed campaign
Lille sit sixth in the Ligue 1 standings, with the campaign in general being somewhat underwhelming.
“Although they’re still only five points off the last automatic Champions League spot, their form in the league has been very underwhelming in 2026,” Tamrat told Villa News.
“It wasn’t all sailing in Europe, too,” he added, after Lille secured a play-off spot on the final day thanks to a late Olivier Giroud winner against Freiburg.
“They lost the home leg against Red Star Belgrade in the play-offs, but World Cup winner Giroud was at it again before Nathan Ngoy won it in extra time.”
Tamrat mentioned the high expectations at the club, given that Lille are the last French side to beat PSG to the title.
“Expectations are always high for Lille to at least perform to the level of Marseille and Monaco. However, there is a surprise package in Ligue 1 this term, which highly affects the fans’ perspective on the season.
“Fierce neighbours RC Lens are only a point behind PSG after 25 matches in the league, while they are the clear favourites among the four teams left in the Coupe de France.”

“That bit is essential because of the rivalry between the two teams,” Tamrat added. “Only going far in the Europa League could reduce that gap for Lille.
“There is also a lack of confidence in the fanbase regarding the Champions League race, with Rennes and Monaco picking up form at the crucial part of the season.”
Looking through a tactical lens, it was mentioned: “During last season’s Champions League, manager Bruno Genesio became only the second coach to beat teams managed by Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, Diego Simeone and a certain Emery.”
This is after Genesio overcame the Villa boss during the 2017-18 term, with Emery then in charge of PSG.
“Genesio is among the few attack-minded coaches in Ligue 1 as he managed to finish a season with more than 80 goals at both Lyon and Rennes. Although his Lille side is far from reaching that level, he is never afraid of taking risks.”
Concluding, Tamrat mentioned the tense encounter between the two sides back in 2024.
“You have to look back at the quarter-final tie from a couple of years ago. In a tie dominated by Emiliano Martinez’s antics, Villa only went through on penalties. The fact that Emery’s side have the home advantage for the return leg this time around could be very crucial, however.
“I expect a tense encounter on Thursday as Lille will try to start next week’s decider at Villa Park with a narrow advantage.”
Aston Villa can gain serious momentum in France
When compared to the fantastic standards set by Villa this season, things have been extremely poor as of late.
At the turn of the year, Emery’s side looked nailed on to go on and claim a Champions League spot, though they now sit in a fight with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Ahead of Villa’s clash with the Manchester giants on Sunday, they have the chance to get back to winning ways on Thursday, and put the wind back in their sails as they look to claim a spit in the top five.
Alongside the momentum in the league, they would continue their impressive European run after finishing second in the Europa League standings prior to the knockout split.
Based on proceedings from two years ago, it will not be comfortable for Emery’s side, but securing a safe pathway to the quarter-finals could be the fire that relights the Aston Villa spark after a far from ideal run as of late.
