Leon Bailey has perfect chance to repeat iconic Aston Villa heroics vs Lille

Aston Villa are preparing for a trip to face Lille for the first time since April 2024.

The Villans are readying up for a Europa League round of 16 clash with the Ligue 1 outfit after finishing second in the league phase.

The two sides have a history, having faced off in the Conference League quarter-finals in the 2023/24 season.

Villa eventually secured their place in the semi-final after a penalty shootout victory that featured some Emi Martinez drama.

The second leg at the Decathlon Arena is well remembered in B6, despite going 2-0 down on the night, and the Villans ultimately had Leon Bailey to thank for the turnaround.

Leon Bailey goes down in folklore for Lille motivation

The feeling around the Jamaica international may not be great right now, but just two seasons ago, he was truly at his best.

He netted 14 and assisted 13 goals in claret and blue as Unai Emery’s side secured Champions League qualification in the Premier League.

Bailey played a massive part in that and also helped his side reach the semi-final of the Conference League after a win in Lille.

He was a substitute in the second leg, but came on to provide a hugely memorable moment as he entered the field.

The winger shouted to his Villa teammates, “Hey, we have time. Look [points to clock], we have time.”

That has been remembered in the Midlands and will never be forgotten, especially because it inspired his side on to victory in the end.

Bailey needs to now repeat Aston Villa heroics

There is no hiding the poor atmosphere surrounding the 28-year-old right now, but his showing at Lille could change things.

The forward came on against the French side in 2024 with 22 minutes of the 90 remaining and went on to feature for over 52 minutes.

In that time, he maintained a 100 per cent shot accuracy with his two attempts while also completing one dribble on the night.

Add one tackle, one interception and five recoveries to that, and it just sums up his work rate on a massive night for the Villans.

If he can relive that night two years later and showcase his best form, there won’t be a single Villa fan who won’t be behind him all the way.
