Aston Villa told what it will take to sign Jonathan David with exit door wide open

Aston Villa target Jonathan David has been backed to leave Juventus this summer.

That is according to Calciomercato, who state that the striker’s spell with the Old Lady is likely to end after one season in Turin.

Teams were reportedly queuing up for David‘s signature when it became clear he would run down his Lille contract in 2025.

The Canadian international was linked with a host of Premier League teams but ended up joining Juve on a free transfer.

But amid the 26-year-old’s struggles in Serie A, Villa have been credited with further interest in the former Gent man, who could be available for a relatively modest fee.

Jonathan David presents low-risk option for Aston Villa

Villa are currently in the top four of the Premier League despite spending very little on players over the course of the season.

Their sole summer recruit was Evann Guessand from Nice for around £30million, and in January, they spent approximately £18m on Tammy Abraham, while teams around them spent hundreds of millions.

Indeed, they are three points ahead of Liverpool, despite Arne Slot’s team spending more than £400m on players than Villa over the summer.

Unai Emery has done a remarkable job at Villa Park so far, but he needs extra help in the transfer market, amid a backdrop of potential financial concerns.

It has now been shared that Villa could sign David for between £13-15.5m ahead of next season.

David has scored five goals and added four assists in 27 Serie A games this season, a far cry from his time at Lille, where he reached the 25-goal mark in his last three seasons at the French team.

Calciomercato state that Villa are working to sign him this summer and barring any “sensational second thoughts”, he won’t stay at Juve, which could open the door again.

Why Aston Villa need attacking reinforcements

In January 2025, Emi Buendia was shipped out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen, while Leon Bailey was relegated to the fringes.

During Villa’s 4-1 loss to Chelsea last Wednesday, the pair were starting a crucial match between two Champions League hopefuls.

That, and more, highlights how Villa have stagnated when it comes to refreshing their squad, with Morgan Rogers’ January 2024 addition their most recent signing to improve Emery’s best XI.

Abraham was signed from Besiktas in January as a back-up to Ollie Watkins, who continues to be picked despite his poor recent form.

Donyell Malen left Villa for Roma on loan in the winter transfer window as he wasn’t content with being second choice to Watkins, and he has been on fire since.

That may also be an issue for David if he were to join, but the Villans, who have scored 39 goals in 29 league matches this season, desperately need some extra quality at the top end of the pitch.

David may not be short of suitors again, but after his disappointing Juventus spell, Villa may be the most attractive option available.
