Unai Emery has surely made Pau Torres’ Aston Villa future clear
Pau Torres is facing a highly uncertain future as an Aston Villa player.
Signed from Villarreal in the summer of 2023 in a deal reportedly worth in the region of £31.5million, Torres has been a good servant to Aston Villa and a shrewd piece of transfer business.
The 29-year-old central defender has played just shy of 100 times for Villa, and has proven to be a key senior figure in the heart of Unai Emery‘s defence over the last few years.
However, the Spanish international’s time at Villa Park may be running out, as the likes of Barcelona had been credited with an interest in him during this season’s winter transfer window.

Why Unai Emery is showing Pau Torres decision is made
But, the big centre-back hasn’t quite been at his best this season, with injury setbacks and inconsistent performances helping to ensure he’s only made 16 Premier League appearances this term.
Contracted with Aston Villa until the summer of 2028, the Spaniard could still be a big part of Villa’s future over the coming years.
However, Emery is already showing that this probably isn’t going to be the case for him, as Torres has fallen firmly out of favour with the Villa boss.

Despite Villa’s form nosediving over the last few weeks, Torres has appeared in only one of the team’s last five Premier League games.
He was an unused substitute against Chelsea last time out, and in the clashes with Leeds, Brighton and Bournemouth respectively over that time period, with his one outing coming in the 2-0 loss to Wolves.
As per Sofascore, Torres has had one Team of the Week inclusion this season, has won 57 per cent of his aerial duels, lost possession an average of 7.7 times per game and makes just 1.1 tackles per game too.
With the way Aston Villa’s season is threatening to end, major changes at the back are sure to take place over the course of the upcoming summer transfer window.
Therefore, if Torres can no longer hold down a place in this current starting XI, then surely he’s got very little hope of doing so next season when reinforcements are bound to arrive in the West Midlands.
Villa moving on from Torres would be the right decision
Nothing can last forever, and knowing when to walk away from something before it gets worse is always a valuable asset to have.
In the case of Torres and Aston Villa, that time appears to be approaching, as at 29, consistent injury problems and now no longer a cemented member of the starting XI, it’s probably time for both parties to go their separate ways.
His contract situation should still enable Villa to bag a sizeable transfer fee for him this summer, and could help pave the way for the team to possibly get younger and better at the position.
After all the injury problems faced this season, Villa need to find players who can be trusted to stay healthy over the course of a campaign, and Torres, unfortunately, just hasn’t proven he can be that player.
