Tyrone Mings chasing shadows, Ezri Konsa even worse – Aston Villa player ratings vs Chelsea
Unai Emery watched on as his Aston Villa side fell to a disastrous 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday.
The Villans knew just how big a Premier League game this was heading into it, and Villa Park enjoyed an electric start with Douglas Luiz’s early goal, before it all fell apart.
Joao Pedro’s leveller should have been the wake-up call that Villa needed, but then the Brazilian swept in his second before the break.
Aston Villa‘s defence was all over the place in the second half as Cole Palmer extended the visitors’ lead to three before Pedro added a third to top off an embarrassing night for Emery.
The loss sees Villa stay in fourth place, as Chelsea have now closed the gap to just three points, and with nine games left to play, the pressure is on.

Tyrone Mings was lost at sea vs Chelsea
As far as defensive displays go, that was quite simply a disgrace. Conceding four goals is bad, but considering it’s a rival for Champions League football, in front of your own home fans, it makes it even worse.
Chelsea’s fast transitions were too much for the Villans, and Tyrone Mings in particular.
- Mings picked up a 6.4 rating
- He made one tackle and three clearances
According to Sofascore, Mings recorded a 6.4 rating, as the Englishman managed to make a mere three defensive contributions in the game.
What made his defensive display even worse is the fact that Chelsea managed to create a whopping 3.92 in xG, with five big chances in total.
He didn’t make a single interception or block, but his performance goes beyond stats anyway. Chelsea’s fourth goal especially showed just how much Mings was lost, and looked like he’d never defended for a day in his life before.
Ezri Konsa even worse than Mings, somehow
There wasn’t much in it, but Ezri Konsa was even worse than Mings against Chelsea.
The centre-back won zero per cent of his aerial duels and zero per cent of his ground duels, in what was probably one of his worst performances of the season.
On the eye, his positioning was all over the place, and there was no communication from him and Mings, and the former rightly earned a 6.3 rating against Chelsea, as highlighted by Sofascore.

More should be expected of Konsa, considering his usual performances and importance to Emery, hence the surprise at such a poor display.
