Aston Villa fans claim Unai Emery made ‘the worst decision’ after what Donyell Malen has just done

Aston Villa decided to let Donyell Malen leave for AS Roma in the January window, recalling Leon Bailey in the process.

The Dutch forward had been in fine form for the Villa Park side, and the decision itself was met with plenty of intrigue.

Right now in B6, Ollie Watkins has been continuing to unimpress supporters, and that has further placed the Malen decision under the microscope.

Now, those fans have been reacting online after what the former Villa forward has continued to do in the Serie A.

How Aston Villa fans reacted as Donyell Malen scores sixth Roma goal

Malen has taken the Italian first division by storm, and he was in action for AS Roma once again on Sunday night.

As Roma took on Juventus in a key fixture for Champions League places, the forward was on the scoresheet once again in a 3-3 draw.

As it stands, the 27-year-old on his own is proving to be more prolific than the whole Aston Villa squad.

In the last eight Premier League matches, the Villans have scored just five goals. Meanwhile, Malen has scored six goals in just seven appearances.

So far, he is showing Unai Emery that he made a big mistake in letting him go, and fans are beginning to think the same.

One supporter said on X, after viewing Malen’s goal versus Juventus: “The worst decision we have made this season.”

Others followed that sentiment up with similar shouts online.

One fan has even begged the question of whether Emery could bring Malen back, saying: “Any chance of a recall and starting him up top?”

Overall, it appears supporters are anguishing in Malen’s successes away from the club, while they continue to struggle in front of goal.

Aston Villa must be careful that this slump does not continue on, or else they may find themselves embroiled in a battle for Europe after looking so far ahead earlier in the season.

Is there any chance of Malen returning after this season?

Unfortunately, Malen’s loan move to AS Roma has an obligation to buy for £21.85million, and the Giallorossi may now be looking at that fee as a bargain.

So, that means the Dutchman’s time at Villa Park has ultimately come to an end.

However, there could be quite the reunion in the Europa League depending on the results of the round of 16. If Aston Villa beat Lille over the two legs, they will face Roma or Bologna.

Unlike the Premier League rules, players out on loan are eligible to play against their parent club in European competition.

Malen could send Emery quite the message if that fixture is drawn.
