Matty Cash called out after getting it ‘horribly wrong’ in horror Aston Villa moment against Wolves

Matty Cash had an evening to forget in Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat against Wolves on Friday.

Cash has been a reliable option for Unai Emery, making 33 appearances in all competitions this season, with three goals and four assists.

However, he was not at the races against the Premier League bottom dwellers, as the Villans fell to a disappointing defeat.

Villa need him to be on top form in the run-in, but that was not the case against Rob Edwards’ side at Molineux.

What has been said about Matty Cash vs Wolves?

Cash was not at his best in the local derby, and that was summarised by a moment where a poor header fell to Toti Gomes.

The wayward shot nearly found Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, who would have had a shot on Emi Martinez’s goal had he made contact.

Speaking on Sky Sports on 27 February (21:10 pm), Don Goodman blasted the Villa star, saying: “That is a terrible defensive header, Matty Cash gets it horribly wrong, right back into a dangerous area, and the shot very nearly picks out Bellegarde at the far post.”

He was then later booked for a foul on Mateus Mane, which was the cherry on top of a dreadful evening for the veteran defender.

How did Cash perform against Wolves?

Cash created one big chance for his teammates, but only three of his seven cross attempts were accurate in the contest, per Sofascore.

He completed 84 per cent of his passes, which is not good enough in a side that likes to keep possession.

He took 87 touches in the clash, and lost the ball 16 times, which definitely did not help his side as they suffered defeat.

The 28-year-old won two of the five tackles that he attempted and made six recoveries in a mixed defensive display.

He also won seven of the 14 ground duels that he attempted for a 50 per cent success rate and committed four fouls.

He was surprisingly solid in the air, winning both aerial battles that he contested.

Could Emery drop Cash in the future?

The idea of dropping the Poland international seems like a more likely option with the emergence of Lamare Bogarde in recent months.

The Dutch Under-21 international has featured across the backline and in midfield this season, and impressed several times.

He was particularly impressive in the FA Cup third-round win against Tottenham, when he made eight passes into the final third, made six recoveries and won six ground duels.

Therefore, Cash may well have to watch from the sidelines in the near future, if he continues to underwhelm with his displays in the run-in.
