Unai Emery has little need for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson at Aston Villa
Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Robertson‘s long-term future at Liverpool is under some doubt, with the 31-year-old out of contract at Anfield this summer.
Aston Villa were linked with signing Robertson in this season’s summer window, and whilst it’s reported that Liverpool aren’t pushing him towards the exit door, talks with the Reds hierarchy have seemingly not gotten anywhere yet.
The report claims that Celtic and Atletico Madrid are both admirers of Robertson, meanwhile in England, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Villa are all said to be monitoring his situation.

Andy Robertson appears to be past his best
Having signed for Liverpool all the way back in the summer of 2017, Robertson has forged an Anfield legacy that will see his status cemented as one of their best servants in modern times.
The Scotland international has played over 360 times for Liverpool, and has kitted out his trophy cabinet with pretty much everything there is to win in domestic and European football.
Two Premier League’s, two League Cups, an FA Cup, one Community Shield, a Champions League win, a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup are some of the achievements on his CV.
As such, he’s undoubtedly established himself as one of the all-time great Premier League left-backs, but unfortunately, those days of him being at the top of his game appear to be beyond him now.
The Scotsman has made just 16 Premier League appearances so far this season, with five of them being starts, culminating in a total of just 638 minutes of top flight action this term.
He’s also only provided four direct goal contributions in his last 70 total appearances for the Reds over the last two seasons, which is a far cry from when he routinely posted double-digit campaigns in that regard.
Unai Emery already has a veteran left-back option
Therefore, this is perhaps a player that Villa should pass on this summer, as not only would he probably command a sizeable wage packet, there wouldn’t appear to be an obvious role for him in Unai Emery‘s side.
In Lucas Digne, Villa already have an experienced left-back to push and compete with Ian Maatsen, and the Frenchman, 32, is contracted at Villa Park until 2028.
Digne only penned that new deal last summer, so it would seem highly unlikely that Villa chiefs would look to bring in a second veteran left-back.
Robertson will want to see out his twilight years playing as regularly as possible, and at Villa Park, that just wouldn’t seem to be the case for him.
