Kieran Maguire shares if Aston Villa could face points deduction for possible second UEFA breach

Kieran Maguire believes that Aston Villa could once again be in breach of UEFA financial regulations this season.

Villa narrowly avoided breaking profit and sustainability rules (PSR) last year by completing the sale of their women’s team.

However, they weren’t able to comply with UEFA’s squad cost ratio rules and were subsequently fined £5.2million back in July, with a warning that the penalty could increase for repeat offences.

Unai Emery’s side are now in real danger of further punishment after failing to address their financial situation, with NSWE clearly not happy.

Kieran Maguire expects Aston Villa fine

UEFA requires clubs in European competition to keep spending on player wages to just 70 per cent of their overall revenue.

In previous years, the limit was 80 per cent, but it was reduced for 2025, and this may lead to Villa facing further fines and punishment.

Speaking on The Overlap, football finance expert Maguire believes that there is a real chance that their wage bill is above the 70 per cent limit, and that the Midlands side could breach UEFA rules again.

He added that, if found guilty, Villa would not be facing any sort of sporting penalty, and it would simply be another fine.

“I think there is a chance that Villa could be in breach of the UEFA rules. Both Villa and Chelsea breached the UEFA rules at the start of the season, and they’ve had to go and follow a very strict business plan.

“There is a danger of Villa failing that again, which would mean they could get a fine, rather than a points deduction.”

Will Aston Villa pass PSR?

Despite struggling to meet UEFA financial regulations, Aston Villa should comply with PSR this season.

Unlike in European competitions, the Premier League tracks finances over a three-year rolling period, with clubs only permitted to lose £105million in that time.

Villa completed the sale of their women’s team back in June 2025, so they should have some leeway for this season’s accounts.

However, it remains to be seen how active the Midlands side can be in the summer transfer window and whether they will be forced to make sales, with the squad cost ratio coming to the Premier League.

Morgan Rogers would be the most likely sacrifice if Villa did need to recoup some funds, given his current value in today’s market.

Rogers has been continuously linked with top clubs around Europe over the last year, and would have plenty of suitors if made available.
