Aston Villa lessons learned in exciting £43m Pavel Sulc transfer update
Aston Villa are showing interest in Lyon midfielder Pavel Sulc ahead of the summer transfer window.
Sulc joined the French giants last summer, making the switch from Czech outfit Viktoria Plzen.
He has since been in fine form in the south of France, scoring 10 times in Ligue 1 as Paulo Fonseca’s side push for a return to the Champions League.
Aston Villa are among a handful of Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Sulc after previous interest last summer, according to the Daily Mail, with Tottenham, Leeds and Nottingham Forest also mentioned.
However, the most serious threats to Villa are said to be Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid, with Lyon hoping to land as much as £43million. This figure is expected to come down, though.
With Villa’s current midfield issues in mind, they could be looking to learn their lesson over the summer.
Aston Villa’s lack of midfield depth could be solved
While injuries have played a huge role in the recent run of form at Villa Park, it has to be acknowledged that it is simply part of the sport.
With Boubacar Kamara, Youri Tielemans and John McGinn all ruled out for the foreseeable future, Unai Emery has been left to find temporary solutions, while the club raced into transfer action during the recent January window.
With Conor Gallagher opting to join Tottenham after his move to the Midlands was all but sealed, Villa sprung into action to secure a loan deal for Douglas Luiz – who returns after a far from ideal stint with Juventus.
The Villans also showed interest in Lucas Bergvall, who is currently sidelined at Spurs.
The direction was clear: Villa required midfielders, with Emery currently scratching his head as to just how this has happened.
While Sulc is more of an attacking midfielder by trade, he would provide vital depth to a side very much in need of it as of now, while also taking some of the weight off of Morgan Rogers’ shoulders, whose form has dipped in recent weeks.
Aston Villa in need of big results in coming weeks
The coming weeks could well define Villa’s season.
Tammy Abraham’s late equaliser secured a 1-1 draw against Leeds on Saturday, ahead of a triple header against Wolves, Chelsea and Manchester United.
Starting with their West Midlands rivals, Villa travel to the bottom dwellers having picked up three points at Molineux just once since 2012, while Wolves will undoubtedly be looking to go out with a bang in the final months of what has been a dismal campaign.
After the recent run of form, both Chelsea and Manchester United have been allowed back into the race for third, while Villa are now in need of a big period to secure the Champions League place that looked very much a guarantee a month ago.
Emery’s side welcome Chelsea to Villa Park on 4 March, before they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United following the international break – two matches that could very much define the end result of the current campaign.
