Amadou Onana stellar in 8/10, Jadon Sancho anonymous – Aston Villa player ratings vs Newcastle United
Aston Villa secured a 2-0 win against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Villa had Emi Martinez to thank after a minute in Newcastle as he stopped Sandro Tonali from opening the scoring with just seconds on the clock.
It was another Emi Buendia stunner for Villa that opened the scoring as his dipping effort left Nick Pope with no chance.
That is how the scoreline remained at St James’ Park until Lucas Digne found Ollie Watkins to head home Villa’s second to secure a 2-0 win.
After yet another hugely important win for Unai Emery’s men, Villa News has rated each player’s performance out of 10.
Amadou Onana monstrous vs Newcastle United
Onana came back in against Fenerbahce last time around and could only play a part off the bench in the Europa League.
You’d never know that he had been struggling with injury after a stunning midfield display away to Newcastle, where he covered almost every blade of grass.
The Belgium international maintained a 90 per cent pass accuracy and was able to create one chance, but it was his defensive work that really caught the eye.
The 24-year-old was involved in 12 defensive actions, with his three tackles, two clearances and two interceptions having a telling impact.
Onana also won four duels on the day, showcasing the command he had of the midfield up against the likes of Joelinton and Tonali.
Jadon Sancho struggles again for Aston Villa
Villa may have secured a memorable win, but there was little to take away from Sancho’s performance on the flank in the north east.
He got the winner for Villa against Fenerbahce, but didn’t have the same impact in the Premier League as he was eventually hooked and replaced by Leon Bailey.
Having completed just 11 passes and taken 25 touches across 59 minutes, that can’t really come as a surprise.
Emery opted to take the winger off, having failed to create a single chance or take a shot, while he also lost four of his six attempted duels.
A day to forget for Sancho personally, but one the travelling Villa faithful won’t forget in a hurry.
