Aston Villa attacker hit by injury minutes into training at new club, move now cancelled

Aston Villa’s January transfer window is beginning to heat up.

Alysson signed for Villa on New Year’s Day, setting the tone for what appeared to be a very busy month ahead in the winter market.

However, business went quiet following that deal, or that was until Aston Villa confirmed the signing of Brian Madjo at the start of this week.

That has really sparked transfer activity at Villa Park into life, with Donyell Malen on the verge of leaving to join Roma, whilst young wing-back Finley Munroe signed for Middlesbrough on Thursday.

Aston Villa talent sees loan chance evaporate in unlucky fashion

However, it hasn’t all been success when it comes to young Aston Villa talents seeking new opportunities this month.

Zepiqueno Redmond signed for Villa in this season’s summer window, joining on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Dutch side Feyenoord.

The 19-year-old forward was sent out on a season-long loan to League One outfit Huddersfield for 2025-26, but come the beginning of this month, the two clubs mutually agreed to cancel that after he’d made just three appearances in all competitions for the Terriers.

However, Redmond suffered a knee injury shortly after signing for Huddersfield, and this bad injury luck has returned to curse him again.

As revealed by The Star, Redmond was on trial with Championship side Sheffield Wednesday this week, as they wanted to take a closer look at him before potentially getting a deal done with Villa.

However, it’s been confirmed that he suffered another knee injury just 20 minutes into a training session on Wednesday, and any chance of him winning a deal has now been ruled out.

Villa may be wise to avoid loaning out Redmond again this season

Depending on the seriousness of this new knee problem, Aston Villa may have no choice but to keep him at Villa Park for the remainder of the season.

But, if it’s deemed to just be a minor issue that he can recover from fairly quickly, then Villa’s decision-makers may be tempted to secure him another loan move right away.

However, given that this is now numerous knee injuries over the span of his first few months as an Aston Villa player, avoiding sending him out to another club would allow Villa’s medical team to take a really close look at him and potentially get to the bottom of what’s been going on.

The last thing anyone will want is for him to be shipped out somewhere else this winter, only for him to hobble back to Aston Villa having suffered yet another injury problem.

He’s evidently a talented young player, and Villa must be extremely confident they’ve worked out why his recurrent knee issues are happening and have passed him a clean bill of health before they feel comfortable letting him leave again.
