Rory Wilson contract twist as Aston Villa exit update drops
Rory Wilson’s future is looking increasingly likely to be away from Aston Villa, even if only in the short term.
Villa beat 2-1 Spurs on Saturday to secure their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, and they currently sit third in the Premier League table.
Unai Emery also has a host of young talents who are all capable of breaking into the first team in the future.
One of those is Wilson, who joined Villa’s academy from Rangers in 2022 for £350,000.
The 20-year-old has an abundance of potential, and a possible loan move abroad could see him extend his stay in B6 for even longer.
Rory Wilson set for one-year extension if he goes on loan
Wilson signed a new contract with Villa in April 2025, and it appears that he is ready to take the next step in his development.
Various sides in the EFL are interested in signing the 20-year-old on loan, but it looks likely that the ex-Rangers youngster will move abroad.
The Athletic reported on Wednesday that Wilson is subjected to a lot of interest from Scandinavia.
If and when the 20-year-old moves on loan, it will trigger a further 12-month extension to the two-year contract he signed in April 2025.
This is a huge bonus for Emery, who is keen for his youngsters to get the playing time they need.

The 20-year-old striker has scored plenty of goals at Bodymoor Heath, and the sky is the limit for the Scotland youth international.

How high is Wilson’s ceiling at Aston Villa?
He has made 24 caps for Scotland, ranging from the U17 to the U21 age groups.
At Villa, Wilson has been a monumental success in the UEFA Youth League, scoring four goals in five games for the U19s in 2025-26.
A move to Scandinavia could be a perfect fit for him, especially given the fact that the Swedish and Norwegian campaign starts in February.
| Scotland age group | Appearances | Goals |
| U17 | 15 | 13 |
| U19 | 7 | 2 |
| U21 | 2 | 0 |
This would allow him to continue his upwards trajectory, rather than settling in at a club that are in the middle of their season.
It will be interesting to see how the first half of 2026 pans out for Wilson, but one thing is clear: a loan move is necessary if Villa want to keep him in B6 for even longer in the future.
