Matty Cash won’t be happy at new transfer update coming out of Aston Villa

Matty Cash has been a constant for Aston Villa since Unai Emery’s arrival back in October 2022.

The 28-year-old has rarely been left on the bench by Emery, only really dropping out of the side due to injury or suspension.

Cash has been superb for Aston Villa once again this season, helping the Midlands outfit challenge at the top of the Premier League with his defensive capabilities and strengths going forward.

However, the Polish international’s run as first-choice right back could soon be coming under threat as Villa scour the transfer market for reinforcements.

Aston Villa in race for Oscar Mingueza

Aston Villa have been regularly linked with Oscar Mingueza over the past 12 months, and were reportedly targeting the Celta Vigo right-back last January.

The 26-year-old came through at Barcelona’s infamous La Masia academy, leaving the Spanish giants in 2022 and becoming a key player for Celta.

According to Caught Offside, Villa are targeting a move for Mingueza during the January transfer window.

The defender’s contract at Celta expires in the summer, meaning that this is the last chance for the La Liga outfit to cash in.

Emery’s side are prepared to offer him a long-term deal which would run until 2030, in the hope of convincing the Spaniard to make the switch to Villa Park.

However, Villa face competition from the likes of Newcastle United and West Ham, who are also eager to bring in Mingueza.

Unai Emery should think twice before replacing Matty Cash

Cash has impressed going forward for Aston Villa this season, scoring three goals and picking up two assists in the Premier League.

According to FBref, the 28-year-old is in the top eight per cent of top-flight full-backs for goals scored per 90 this term, and the top 12 per cent for shots on target per 90.

He also has an impact defensively, recording 3.54 clearances, 1.71 tackles, and 0.43 shots blocked per 90 in the Premier League in 2025-26.

There’s no reason to replace the Polish international given his current form, but Emery may be targeting Mingueza as a back-up option instead.

Aston Villa were without Cash for their recent defeat to Arsenal, after the defender picked up a suspension for five yellow cards.

Emery was forced to utilise Lamare Bogarde out of position at right-back, and the 22-year-old struggled, highlighting the need for more depth in that position.
