Aston Villa trophy-winning player in line for Manchester United job after Ruben Amorim sack news

Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford, with a former Aston Villa player in the running to replace him.

The Red Devils currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, 11 points adrift of Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side.

Man United were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa last month, with Morgan Rogers grabbing a brace in what proved to be Amorim’s last defeat in charge.

The Portuguese manager has finally paid the price for a disastrous spell, and a former Villa player is one of the favourites to replace him.

Gareth Southgate in running to replace Ruben Amorim

With Amorim departing Man United, attention has already turned to who will come in at Old Trafford.

Darren Fletcher is expected to take the manager role on an interim basis while the Red Devils search for a permanent boss.

According to one bookmaker, Oliver Glasner and Enzo Maresca are joint favourites to be appointed by United, with both currently valued at 4/1.

However, Aston Villa fans may be interested to learn that their former player Gareth Southgate is fifth in the running to replace Amorim.

Southgate is currently priced up at 12/1, behind Glasner, Maresca, Laurent Blanc and Xavi Hernandez.

Current Villa manager Unai Emery is back at 25/1, and there are absolutely no fears that he would even consider a switch to Old Trafford.

What did Gareth Southgate win at Aston Villa?

Southgate moved from Crystal Palace to Aston Villa in 1995 for a reported fee of £2.5million after the Eagles were relegated from the Premier League.

In his first season at Villa Park, the defender helped the Midlands side lift the EFL Cup, as they beat Leeds United at Wembley in the final with goals from Savo Milosevic, Ian Taylor and Dwight Yorke.

It remains Villa’s last piece of major silverware, and Southgate was a crucial part of the defence, playing in a back three alongside Paul McGrath and Ugo Ehiogu against Leeds.

The 55-year-old spent six seasons at Villa between 1995 and 2001, making over 200 appearances before joining Middlesbrough for £6.5m.
