Ally McCoist adamant over Aston Villa after what he saw vs Arsenal – ‘No doubt about it’

Aston Villa catapulted themselves towards the top of the Premier League table after a dramatic three points against Arsenal at the weekend.

Emi Buendia scored a last-minute winner as Unai Emery’s side pulled off a remarkable 2-1 victory over the table-topping Gunners at Villa Park.

Matty Cash had put Aston Villa in front, but the hosts were pegged back by a Leandro Trossard goal before Buendia won it with seconds remaining.

The Midlands outfit have now moved up to third in the Premier League, and are just three points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.

Ally McCoist belives Aston Villa are in Premier League battle

Arsenal had looked almost untouchable before this weekend, and were on an astonishing 18-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

Mikel Arteta’s side hadn’t tasted defeat since August, but Aston Villa put an end to their impressive streak and may have now launched themselves into the title race.

Villa had an expected goals (xG) return of 2.27 to Arsenal’s 1.84, while there was nothing between the two sides in terms of shots (15 each).

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Rangers and Scotland striker Ally McCoist was adamant that Emery’s side should be in the conversation.

When asked whether Villa were in the title fight, McCoist said: “Yes is the answer to that, there is no doubt about it.”

However, McCoist was less confident about whether Villa could actually beat Arsenal to the Premier League crown.

He said: “Will [Aston Villa] win it? No, I don’t think they will because I still think Arsenal will win it.”

Aston Villa are the Premier League’s form team

After picking up just three points from their first five games of the season, Villa sat firmly in the Premier League relegation zone.

However, from that point Emery’s side have been almost faultless, and across the past 10 matches they have picked up the most points in the whole division.

Last 10 games in the Premier League

Villa have won nine of their last 10 in the Premier League and 13 of their last 15 across all competitions, and there is no sign that they will be slowing down anytime soon.

On current form, there is absolutely no doubt that the Midlands outfit are in the title race, but whether they can sustain their challenge across a whole season is yet to be discovered.
