Unai Emery can become Aston Villa’s greatest Premier League manager vs Brighton
Unai Emery can become Aston Villa’s greatest ever Premier League manager on Wednesday.
While the Villans started the season in dire fashion, their 1-1 draw to Everton in the Premier League was the start of something great.
After Villa’s narrow 1-0 win over Wolves on Sunday, Emery’s side has now won their last five games in all competitions.
It’s an impressive feat and one that indicates Villa are well on track to achieve their dream of a Premier League top-four finish again this season.
The accolades aren’t stopping there for Emery, though.

Unai Emery on the verge of Aston Villa history
Boubacar Kamara has been underrated for Villa this season, but has been a key player for Emery.
The midfielder fired Villa in front in their win against Wolves in a game that ended up being more difficult than assumed on 30 November.
- Kamara’s goal came from his only shot
- He registered 0.06 expected goals
- He had 0.59 xG on target
The goal was down to individual brilliance and reflected Villa’s attacking woes in the local derby.
- Villa took 16 shots against Wolves
- Only six were on target
- Seven shots game from outside the box
Wolves were a difficult team to break down, and this can be seen by the fact that the Villans failed to create a single big chance across 90 minutes, according to Sofascore.
Nevertheless, a win is a win, and it means “classy” Emery has won 61 of his 114 Premier League games as Aston Villa manager.
This is the joint-most victories any manager has had in charge of the Villans in the competition, which puts him level with John Gregory and Martin O’Neill.
The Spanish coach would surpass their feat with a win over Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday.
Aston Villa have turned things around
After a tough start to the season, Emery has coached Villa back to their winning ways.
Villa’s current win percentage this season is on track to be its highest out of the three full seasons under Emery in all competitions
- 2025-26: 58 per cent
- 2024-25: 56 per cent
- 2023-24: 52 per cent
The Villans failed to win any of their first six games this season and didn’t score in their first four.
This reflects a huge turnaround as well as how impressive Emery is as a manager.
With tough fixtures against the likes of Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester United just around the corner, Emery will be hoping that his winning ways continue, with history only 90 minutes away.
