Michael Oliver controversy called out after what happened in Aston Villa vs Man City – ‘No chance’

Michael Oliver has come under fire after an error in judgment already, as Aston Villa welcomed Manchester City on Sunday.

Villa started brightly against Manchester City at Villa Park on 26 October with the hope of bouncing back to winning ways under Unai Emery.

Go Ahead Eagles secured a 2-1 win against Villa in the Europa League last time out, but the claret and blue outfit started much better against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Ahead of signing a new contract with Villa, Matty Cash opened the scoring with a superb weak-foot effort from the edge of the box.

The Poland international was afforded the chance after a moment of controversy that sparked fury from the Man City bench.

Michael Oliver helped Aston Villa vs Manchester City

Emi Buendia missed a penalty as Villa lost 2-1 against Go Ahead Eagles and came off injured against the Citizens after just 29 minutes.

This was the only blow to the Villans in the early stages as the home side looked superb as they continued to catch City out on the counterattack.

It was deserved for the hosts to take the lead as a cleverly worked set-piece routine ended with Cash finding the bottom corner.

Mateus Nunes was left fuming before the Villa man netted after believing a goalkick should have been awarded in his favour.

Looking at the replay, the Portuguese defender was right, but referee Oliver opted to award a corner to the claret and blue outfit.

Former Birmingham City man Clinton Morrison spoke out on this decision via BBC Five Live on 26 October, stating that he believed it was incorrect.

He said: “Michael Oliver has made a mistake, but do Aston Villa care?

One thing about Villa is that they get their set-pieces spot on. People make decoy runs, and it comes to Matty Cash, who still has a lot to do. He drills it with his left foot into the bottom corner.

Man City have one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but Donnarumma had no chance.

What did Andy Hinchcliffe say about Matty Cash’s goal vs Manchester City?

The ex-Nottingham Forest man has continued to showcase his ability to impact games this season, with his second goal of the campaign.

Cash netted with a long-range effort against Sunderland, but did have an error from Robin Roefs to thank for that strike sneaking in.

The same accusation can’t be suggested against City, as his touch and finish were something to behold at Villa Park.

Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe was blown away by the goal as Villa took the lead with just 19 minutes on the clock.

He said: “Matty Cash’s touch and finish is outstanding. He’s moved onto his weaker left foot, but he concentrates on keeping the ball down and hitting the target.

The ball is running away from him, head down, lovely clean strike, and there’s no chance for Donnarumma. Quite brilliant from Matty Cash.

The Pole is deserving of all the plaudits after being rewarded with an excellent goal to repay his recent performance level.
