Aston Villa player ratings vs Go Ahead Eagles: Jadon Sancho catches the eye, 3/10 is a worry

Aston Villa failed to secure a third straight Europa League victory against Go Ahead Eagles.

Villa travelled to face Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday in the hope of maintaining their 100 per cent winning record on the continent this season.

After Villa beat Tottenham 2-1 last time out, confidence was clearly on the up for Unai Emery’s side in the opening exchanges in Deventer.

Summer signing from OGC Nice, Evann Guessand grabbed his first goal for the Villans to put his side 1-0 up before Mathis Suray levelled things with a deflected effort.

The home outfit went on to take the lead as right-back Mats Deijl broke forward before chipping the ball over Emi Martinez to make it 2-1.

Villa had a perfect opportunity to level the score, but Emi Buendia lifted an effort well over the bar from the penalty spot on 79 minutes.

On a night where Villa were embarrassed in front of a 10,400 capacity crowd, Villa News has rated each player’s performance out of 10.

Jadon Sancho beacon of light for Aston Villa

Jadon Sancho signed on loan from Manchester United over the summer, but hasn’t really been given a chance to impress.

The 25-year-old came in against the Dutch outfit and did put in a positive shift in the Europa League outing.

The Englishman started on the left and had a telling impact on play in the early stages, creating one chance across his 32 attempted passes, with an accuracy of 91 per cent.

Sancho also got one shot off and completed a dribble as he looked to make an impact on the Villans’ performance from the start.

It was strange to see him taken off, especially with Guessand struggling to do much of note after he netted the opener.

Victor Lindelof struggled from start vs Go Ahead Eagles

It came as a surprise when the team sheet dropped and Victor Lindelof was starting as a makeshift right-back in the Netherlands.

The Swede has already played in midfield for Villa this season as he continues to feature seemingly anywhere but his usual centre-half position.

Emery’s decision to start the 31-year-old didn’t pay off, as he had no impact for the away side in Deventer.

Lindelof contributed only two defensive actions and failed to win a single duel in a zero per cent completion rate, making his inclusion unclear.

Ian Maatsen was much better on the opposite flank, regularly getting forward, while his Swedish teammate struggled.
