Sam Matterface shares what everyone thinks about Morgan Rogers as Aston Villa star scores for England vs Wales

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers finally broke his goal drought by scoring England’s opener against Wales on Thursday evening.

Rogers has started the season in disappointing fashion, with Unai Emery’s side struggling to find the back of the net in the early parts of the campaign.

Villa achieved an unwanted record by becoming the fifth team in Premier League history to not score in any of their opening five Premier League matches.

However, Rogers’ season could be back on track after what he did for England.

Morgan Rogers scores first England goal against Wales

Rogers won the PFA Young Premier League Player of the Season in 2024-25, and his stellar performances earned him a first England call-up in November 2024.

He opened the scoring at Wembley by finishing a smart pass from Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi inside three minutes.

ITV commentator Sam Matterface said everything on the minds of Aston Villa fans and others as Rogers scored his first goal for England.

He said: “His goalscoring record means that many people believe he’s had a slow start to this season, but he’s had a fast start to this match.”

The 23-year-old has been a revelation since joining from Middlesbrough in the January 2024 transfer window, and he has now scored his first goal for The Three Lions.

Aston Villa had a disappointing transfer window, with most of their business coming in the last week of August.

This has meant Emery is still figuring out Villa’s best starting lineup, and has contributed to the team’s poor start.

With Villa sitting 13th in the Premier League, the onus is on Rogers to drive his side up the table.

England possesses a huge wealth of attacking talent, yet Rogers is firmly part of Tuchel’s plans.

The next few international breaks will be extremely important for the England manager to decide who he will be taking to North America in June for the World Cup.

Despite his poor start to the season, Rogers has been included in the England squad ahead of the likes of Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish.

His goal against Wales will massively help his chances of achieving his boyhood dream of appearing in a World Cup for England, but he has to bring this form back to Villa Park.
