Morgan Rogers sale can be sanctioned right now if what ex-Aston Villa player’s said is true

Morgan Rogers was a standout Premier League star for Aston Villa last season, but the midfielder now finds himself in woeful form.

The 23-year-old was terrible again on Thursday, as Villa beat Bologna 1-0 to win their first game of the season.

Rogers was sarcastically cheered by Villa fans for completing a pass, with the England international completing just 10 of his 24 throughout the 90 minutes.

The former West Brom man, who arrived in January of 2024, was so impressive last season but looks a shadow of his former self so far this season.

Unai Emery is expected to drop Rogers against Fulham on Sunday, with the Spaniard in trouble himself.

Darren Bent suggests off-pitch problems with Morgan Rogers

Chelsea were persistently linked with a move for Rogers in the summer, along with Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool.

But the midfielder stayed put at Villa Park and had been expected to sign a new contract, but those talks have since died down.

On Thursday, Rogers put in what was, perhaps, his worst performance in a Villa shirt so far, despite his team emerging victorious.

The 23-year-old was hopeless, misplacing the majority of his passes and losing nearly all of his duels.

Darren Bent had suggested that there could be more to the talent’s problems this season, past just a poor period of form.

Ollie Watkins has got no confidence, and you can see that,” the former Villa striker told talkSPORT on Friday.

“But Morgan Rogers looks like he is not interested. Fans are quite quick when they see a player not quite running or doing what they were doing last season, they go ‘hold on, what’s going on here?’

“Well, he was linked to some big clubs, and maybe he was thinking ‘oh I wouldn’t mind one of them’ and it hasn’t happened.

“And that’s why maybe he’s a little bit throwing his toys out the pram a little bit. Because he was good for England.”

If Bent is right in what he’s saying – and based on what fans have seen from the stands, he’s not massively wide of the mark – then Villa must think about getting Rogers off their books.

If he is going to continue sulking and not turn his form around, then Villa would be better off without anyway.

Morgan Rogers looked a different player for England

Bent is right to pick out Rogers’ performances for England, because the midfielder was superb for Thomas Tuchel’s side against Serbia just three weeks ago.

The Villa man created five chances and completed three dribbles, the most of any player on the pitch.

Rogers was dominant in the duel, too, winning six of his nine, and picked up an assist for Noni Madueke’s goal in the first half.

Where it is a tactical issue, or a personal one, there is clearly a problem with Rogers at Villa, and Emery will need to take action.
