Aston Villa were ready to sell Donyell Malen already after Unai Emery update emerges

Aston Villa have had a poor start to the Premier League season

Unai Emery’s side have yet to win a game this season, and still haven’t found the back of the net after four games.

Villa’s 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday highlighted the lack of threat going forward, with the Villans barely troubling the opposition goal.

The Villains have been linked to new strikers in the past few days, with the current forward line misfiring.

They need to solve this issue quickly, and with the Europa League starting soon, Villa’s squad depth will come into focus once more, particularly Donyell Malen.

Donyell Malen ready to be let go by Aston Villa

Malen has proven to have been an underwhelming signing so far for Villa.

Arriving from Borussia Dortmund in January, the Dutchman has failed to live up to the hype surrounding his arrival, despite a positive pre-season.

Malen’s Villa struggles followed him on international duty, and it now appears his time at Villa Park could be coming to an end.

According to the Mail on Sunday on 14 September, Villa were ready to offload Malen in the summer if it enabled them to pursue other targets.

The report goes on to say that Emery is somewhat reluctant to use Malen, even though Ollie Watkins is currently out of form.

Emery’s unwillingness to turn to the Dutchman may be the final nail in the coffin for his Villa career, after coming on in the 83rd minute at Everton.

Donyell Malen has been a disappointment for Villa

Malen arrived from Borussia Dortmund for a reported £19 million in January and has yet to impress Villa fans with his displays.

Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho’s arrivals put more pressure on the winger to perform unless he was to be dropped down the pecking order.

Malen played in the Dortmund team that reached the Champions League final in 2024, but has not shown any signs of being that player for Villa.

With Emery’s patience seemingly wearing thin, fans may not see the Dutchman at Villa Park for too much longer.
