John McGinn makes Aston Villa history in Scotland’s 2-0 win vs Belarus
Aston Villa favourite John McGinn was a standout in Scotland’s 2-0 win against Belarus.
McGinn was linked with Everton in the summer, but the Villans were adamant that they were keeping their starman.
The midfielder has spent seven record-breaking years with Villa, guiding them from the Championship to the Champions League quarter-finals last season.
McGinn was tremendous for Scotland against Denmark in their 0-0 draw and again showed his class against Belarus on Monday.

John McGinn becomes most capped international player for Aston Villa
Aston Villa have one eye on their next game against Everton, but will also be keeping tabs on how players are doing for their nations.
Youri Tielemans has impressed for Belgium, but it is McGinn who is breaking all the records during the international break.
The Scotsman started their 2-0 win over Belarus, and in doing so, became the most capped international player while playing for Villa.
Most capped Aston Villa players:
- John McGinn – 70, Scotland
- Olof Mellberg – 69, Sweden
- Steve Staunton – 64, Ireland
McGinn has made 203 top-flight appearances for the Villans, scoring 17 and assisting 23, and has been an important figure under four different managers.
He overtook Olof Mellberg with his appearance on 8 September, who was capped 69 times during his time in the Midlands.
Mellberg played 232 Premier League games for Villa between 2001 and 2008, and is followed by Steve Staunton in the list.
The Republic of Ireland international played at Villa Park across two different spells between 1991 and 1998 and 2000 and 2003.

John McGinn continues to set records for Aston Villa
It will be a sad day when McGinn leaves Villa.
The midfielder’s current contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, when he will be 32 years old.
Records John McGinn has set at Aston Villa:
- Helped Aston Villa equal a 43-year-old club record by winning their first three Champions League matches without conceding a goal in 2024/25
- Most ground duels won in the Premier League since the start of the 2019/20 season, with 1,080
Before he leaves, he has an opportunity to go on and set more records. The Scotsman is just 54 appearances behind Alan Wright, who has the third-highest Premier League appearances for the Villans.
