Aston Villa fans instantly pile in as club shares Emi Martinez message – ‘Awkward’

Emi Martinez is currently a divisive figure at Aston Villa.

Reports suggested that Martinez was attempting to force a deadline-day move from Villa Park that ultimately never materialised.

Martinez had been perpetually linked with Manchester United throughout the transfer window, but a move never materialised, and ultimately shot stopper is staying put at Villa.

Even a late approach from Galatasaray wasn’t enough to see Martinez leave B6, and now he must face the music when he attempts to reintegrate himself at Villa.

Aston Villa fans react as club share Emi Martinez message

The Villa Park faithful let their thoughts be known regarding Martinez over the weekend during their 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, as the Argentina international was absent from the squad.

After these actions from Martinez in recent days, the goalkeeper perhaps has the most unfortunate-timed birthday on 2 September, with Villa wishing the now 33-year-old a happy birthday on X despite recent attempts to leave and an apparent refusal to play for the club.

Understandably, the club’s happy birthday was not received well by the Villa supporters, who had their say in the replies.

One rightly pointed out how “awkward” it was, while another wished Martinez “good luck” in integrating himself back into the dressing room.

Emi Martinez may have jeopardised World Cup hopes, and it’s all his own doing

With the World Cup taking place this summer, Martinez will obviously want to be involved again after his heroics for Argentina back in 2022 as they lifted football’s most prestigious prize.

However, he has now run the risk of not being involved entirely.

If Emery chooses to keep Martinez on the bench throughout the campaign as a result of his antics, it is unlikely that the former Arsenal man will start in goal for his country if he has not played much football throughout the season.

At 33, this is likely his last opportunity to play in a World Cup, and if he misses out, then he will not have anybody to blame but himself.
