Victor Lindelof on his way for Aston Villa medical in shock last-gasp transfer
Aston Villa are edging closer to the surprise signing of Victor Lindelof.
Lindelof has been a free agent ever since leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, playing his final game against Villa as Thomas Bramall’s controversial decision took the headlines.
This could see the Sweden international help patch up holes in Unai Emery’s squad after losing Axel Disasi at the end of his loan from Chelsea.
As it stands, the Villans have just three senior centre-backs, with their lack of squad depth exposed after Ezri Konsa was sent off for Villa against Newcastle.
It now appears that Monchi has worked to plug that gap and looks set to do so with the shock-free transfer signing of Lindelof at Villa Park.

Victor Lindelof signing highlights Aston Villa problems
There is no getting away from the financial rules from UEFA that Villa have had to combat, which have hampered any transfer business.
This has seen just two signings come in through the doors at Bodymoor Heath, resulting in widespread frustration on the terraces in B6.
Aston Villa summer signings so far:
- Marco Bizot
- Evann Guessand
With just one day remaining until the 1 September transfer deadline, any business has to be conducted quickly in claret and blue.
It looks as if that’s what the Villans are likely to do with a surprise move for Lindelof, looking to be edging closer ahead of the Crystal Palace clash at Villa Park.
This comes after Charlotte Duncker reported on 31 August that the Swedish centre-back is set to undergo a medical soon ahead of a free transfer move.
The report adds that the next 24 hours are expected to be busy in the Midlands, with further deals hopeful of being completed before the window slams shut.
Aston Villa make smart Victor Lindelof swoop
It is far from the flashy name that many Villa fans would want, such as Jaydee Canvot, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
At 31, the centre-half will bring piles of experience, having won 14 career trophies with Manchester United, Porto and Sweden under-21s.
Club | Trophies won |
Manchester United | FA Cup, Carabao Cup |
Benfica | Taca de Portugal (2), Super Cup (2), Liga Portugal (4), Taca da Liga (3) |
Sweden U21s | EURO U21 |
This will see the right-footer act as direct back-up for Konsa, with the duo of Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres providing imbalance against Brentford.
It is certainly interesting to see this deal accelerate so quickly, especially after Lindelof had looked destined to join Fiorentina previously.
