Aston Villa can sign former target loved by Arne Slot after new transfer development

Aston Villa could still add to their squad in the final week of what has been a frustrating transfer window, and the perfect opportunity may have opened up.

Evann Guessand is the only senior outfield arrival this summer, while Jacob Ramsey was sold to Newcastle in recent days in a window which threatens to derail Villa’s season.

Unai Emery will need reinforcements in his Aston Villa squad if they are to challenge for a Champions League spot again after narrowly missing out last season.

Aston Villa may need attacking additions, but could also benefit from another full-back, and a previous target may now be available again.

Aston Villa could sign Lutsharel Geertruida

Aston Villa were keen on former Feyenoord right-back Lutsharel Geertruida last year, but lost out as the defender moved to RB Leipzig.

However, it has not been plain sailing for the Dutchman at Leipzig, and he could now be on the move before the transfer window shuts, after falling down the pecking order.

German journalist Philipp Hinze has now reported that Geertruida could leave, with several clubs interested in him, amid his poor situation at Leipzig.

“Lutsharel Geertruida remains a player to watch closely until deadline day,” He posted on X.

“His situation at Leipzig has not improved. The Dutchman spent the full 90 minutes on the bench against Bayern. Several inquiries have been made for the player.

“A number of clubs have approached Leipzig in recent weeks. Interested parties are mainly considering a loan deal with option to buy. His situation remains open until deadline day. A transfer or a stay – both are still possible.”

This could open the door for Villa to sign him as a new right-back in the coming days, and he could be the ideal upgrade on Matty Cash they were looking for.

Arne Slot a big fan of Lutsharel Geertruida

Geertruida was excellent at Feyenoord, and made 202 appearances for the Dutch side, with 24 goals and 11 assists to his name as an attacking right-back.

The defender can also play centrally and further forward, and was linked with Liverpool before Arne Slot’s arrival in the Premier League last year, with the Dutchman said to be a huge fan of Geertruida.

The Dutchman can become Emery’s own Jeremie Frimpong, and would help Villa in both attacking and defensive phases.

If they can secure a loan deal with an option to buy, Villa can upgrade their defence at a low cost, and Geertruida could be the solution to a long-term problem position for Emery.
