Aston Villa transfer state of play: Done deals and what to expect before window shuts

Aston Villa still have a lot of work to do in the final few days of the transfer window.

After a disappointing start to the season, Unai Emery will be hoping he can make some additions to his squad, whilst also retaining certain key players.

Villa have allowed Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey to depart this window and, having not scored a goal in their first two matches, will need more attacking reinforcements, especially given Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford have also exited following the end of their loan deals.

Despite being linked with several big names, Villa will need to act swiftly to ensure this transfer window isn’t seen as a failure.

Who have Aston Villa sold and bought so far this summer?

After missing out on Champions League football on the final day of last season, Villa have been surprisingly quiet in terms of arrivals.

Evann Guessand’s £30.5million move is the only notable arrival of the window, arriving from Nice.

The striker scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in Ligue 1, and is an imposing striker who can cause real problems in the air.

Samuel Iling-Junior has returned from his loan spell at Middlesborough, and looks set to become a good squad option for Villa.

On the other end of the scale, Villa have been extremely busy when it comes to letting players go this window.

Villa finally let go of Philippe Coutinho, whilst Enzo Barrenechea, Bailey and new arrival Yasin Ozcan have gone out on loan to Benfica, Roma and Anderlecht respectively.

The sale of Ramsey is undoubtedly the big talking point if the window, with Ramsey moving to Newcastle amid PSR concerns.

What will Aston Villa do before 1 September transfer deadline?

With only five days remaining in the window, Villa still have a lot of work to do if they are to replace some of the quality that has left the club.

However, the priority at the moment seems to be keeping one of their stars, with Morgan Rogers linked with a move to Tottenham.

Reports in the Express claim that Matty Cash could also be heading for the exit door, following interest from former club Nottingham Forest.

Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has also been linked with Manchester United, as doubts continue over his future at the club.

As for incomings, Villa have made a proposal for Marseille midfielder Adrien Rabiot to join the club, with the 30-year-old being placed on the transfer list following a physical altercation with teammate Jonathan Rowe.

Emery is also keen to bring West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta to Villa Park, with the Hammers demanding at least £60m for the Brazilian.
