Alan Shearer backs Aston Villa to strike last-ditch loan deal as £10m info shared on MOTD

Aston Villa could be set to delve into the loan market in the coming days.

Villa fell to a 1-0 defeat against Brentford on Saturday (23 August) as Unai Emery’s side missed out on three points once again at the start of this season.

Having also failed to score again, questions have been raised of the Spaniard, especially having left Donyell Malen on the bench once again.

This has ultimately left the Villa Park faithful reeling and demanding that new signings come through the door after a stale opening two games of the campaign.

This won’t be easy due to financial constraints, something which has seen Alan Shearer open up about potential loan additions in B6 before the end of the window.

Aston Villa need new signings and quick

As it stands, Evann Guessand from OGC Nice is Villa’s only outfield signing of the summer, something which has to change before the 1 September deadline.

That isn’t as easy as it seems, mainly due to UEFA’s Squad Cost Rules, as it appears that the B6 club are out of the woods when it comes to the Premier League and PSR.

As a result, the prospect of new permanent signings, other than a potential Villa Park return for Marco Asensio this summer, feels increasingly unlikely.

This has seen a number of loan targets assessed to this stage, with Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea being the latest to be linked.

The frustration of this summer hasn’t been lost on Shearer, who has been left baffled by the financial rules, especially given Emery’s lack of net spend since joining Villa in 2022.

Speaking on Match of the Day (23 August), he said: “They’re hampered. I guess they could try and sign some players on loan. I’ve said before that the PSR system doesn’t sit well with me in terms of what you can and can’t spend.

“Emery has had six transfer windows and has made a profit of £10million. Obviously, salaries are hampering them also, because I don’t think PSR was brought in for this situation for Aston Villa when they’ve clearly got an owner with the money.

“It’s a really difficult situation for them to be in.”

Unai Emery to soon face pressure at Aston Villa

There is no getting away from the fact that the Spaniard is easily one of the best managers that Villa Park has ever seen.

In saying that, that doesn’t mean that Emery should be immune to criticism, especially after what has been a terrible start to the campaign.

As frustrating as they have been, the results aren’t the main worry among fans, it is the dreadful performances which are raising huge concerns in B6.

Against Brentford, the Villans were blunt and never truly looked like scoring as they consistently tried to walk the ball into the back of the net.

This is something that Emery has to take an element of blame for, especially with Malen, Guessand, and Emi Buendia left on the bench once again from the start.

Something needs to change, whether that be from the transfer market or otherwise, before the Villa boss begins to come under scrutiny.
