Nottingham Forest in advanced talks for defender after Matty Cash update

Matty Cash could leave Aston Villa before the end of the summer transfer window.

Nottingham Forest are exploring a move for Cash, who has held talks over extending his contract.

Cash could be the second defender set to leave in the coming days, after Girona agreed a fee reportedly worth £1.7million for Alex Moreno.

Villa are interested in a move for Barcelona teenager Hector Fort, who could be targeted to replace Cash, should he move on this month.

Nottingham Forest make move for Angel Carmona

Cash was a divisive figure at Villa last season, with some fans disappointed with the defender’s lack of consistency.

The Poland international also struggled with injuries, missing nine league games while on the treatment table.

But he remains the right-back that Unai Emery favours. Villa did buy 22-year-old defender Andres Garcia from Levante in January, but the Spaniard made just seven Premier League appearances in the second half of the season.

Selling Cash could offer decision-makers at Villa Park an opportunity to improve Emery’s team, and Nottingham Forest certainly have money to spend.

The 28-year-old spent six years with the Reds before Villa signed him, and a reunion could make sense for all parties.

However, it appears as if that chance has already passed, with Fabrizio Romano reporting on 20 August that Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks to sign Jose Angel Carmona from Sevilla.

The 23-year-old made 35 appearances in La Liga last season and has featured for Spain’s under-21 side.

Matty Cash should be replaced by Villa

Cash could still leave Villa Park this summer, despite Nottingham Forest’s pivot to alternative targets, and Villa should hope he does.

The defender offers very little on a statistical level and is often prone to mistakes on the ball.

In fact, according to FBref, Cash ranks in the 16th percentile for errors when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s big five leagues.

If Villa hope to surge back towards Champions League football this season, they must look to fortify their team, and one way of doing that will be by replacing, or at least providing competition for, Cash.
