‘Monchi performs transfer miracle’ as Aston Villa deal becomes official
Aston Villa have received a lot of criticism for their transfer dealings so far.
Despite reaching Europe for a third successive season, Evann Guessand remains Villa’s only major purchase.
While much of this can be put down to financial restrictions, it has remained a disappointing summer.
Monchi, who is president of football operations at the Birmingham outfit, oversees much of their business and has continued to remain active this summer.

Leander Dendoncker departs Aston Villa for Real Oviedo
On Tuesday, Aston Villa confirmed that Leander Dendoncker had left the Birmingham outfit for Real Oviedo.
This ended the summer-long transfer saga of trying to find the midfielder a new club after falling out of Unai Emery’s plans.
Since joining from Wolves in 2022, the Belgian only made 36 but picked up a hefty wage.
Going into his final year, it was estimated that Dendoncker was picking up £90,000-a-week at Villa.
- Dendoncker hadn’t played for Villa since the 2023/24 campaign
- The midfielder was loaned out to both Napoli and Anderlecht
- Dendoncker has now departed for Real Oviedo
Earlier in the window, due to the lack of interest, it was suggested that Aston Villa were considering terminating Dendoncker’s contract, which would have no doubt cost the Birmingham club further.
Therefore, Monchi has performed a miracle by finding a buyer for the midfielder and avoiding this additional fee.
With PSR and UEFA proving to be an issue for Villa, this move could allow Emery to be more active in the transfer window going forward.
Hopefully, Monchi can now work his magic to find additional buyers for Villa’s other outcasts.

How much have Aston Villa reduced their wage bill this summer?
While it is unknown how much Villa’s new signings are currently on, the Birmingham outfit have saved a significant amount on departures.
So far this summer, Emery has overseen the exit of several players.
On top of Dendoncker, Kortney Hause, Jacob Ramsey, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Phillipe Coutinho, and Robin Olsen have left the club.
Aston Villa departures | Wages per week |
Phillipe Coutinho | £125,000 |
Leander Dendoncker | £90,000 |
Jacob Ramsey | £70,000 |
Robin Olsen | £50,000 |
Kortney Hause | £10,000 |
Kaine Kesler-Hayden | £3,000 |
This is also without including the departures of Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, who were on loan last season.
Therefore, Villa have done an excellent job at reducing an enormous wage bill.
