Aston Villa ‘points deduction’ called for after ’embarrassing’ scenes v Newcastle

Aston Villa endured a frustrating afternoon on Saturday as they opened their new Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against Newcastle.

The Villans would have been encouraged by the possibility of facing a Magpies side without their talisman Alexander Isak, but the game simply didn’t pan out as expected for the B6 outfit.

Villa looked second-best for the majority of the 90 minutes, and their frustrations were compounded when Ezri Konsa was sent off for pulling down Anthony Gordon while he was through on goal.

In the end, Unai Emery’s side could probably count themselves lucky to have even salvaged a point from what was a less than ideal opening league outing.

Fans call for Aston Villa deduction after bizarre moment

Marco Bizot had a busy afternoon in the Villa goal, as the new arrival made three crucial saves to help keep the visitors at bay.

While the red card essentially put paid to any hopes of the Villans snatching all three points, it would also be an exaggeration to say that it changed the course of the game.

Emery’s men found it difficult to get going in the early stages, and barring a brief upturn immediately after the half-time interval, it was a largely disappointing performance.

To make matters worse for Villa, they have also been at the centre of ridicule from other fans around the country on X, after a supporter was caught by the TNT Sports cameras wearing a mask of the ‘Ibiza Final Boss,’ a man who has gone viral on social media in the last few weeks.

One West Ham fan suggested that the Villans should receive a points deduction, while a Birmingham fan branded it as “embarrassing.”

Emery will be concerned by performance vs Newcastle

Villa’s performance will have concerned Emery, as it served to further highlight the frustrations from a difficult summer for his team.

Their financial situation has made it hard for the Villans to adequately strengthen their hand, and it is largely the same crop of players who turned out for them last term that will be tasked with breaking back into the top four.

The second city outfit do not have a weak squad by any means, but their lack of control of the game in the first half was concerning against a side who will likely be a direct rival.

There may only be a few weeks of the transfer window remaining, but the boss will surely be desperate to work with Monchi to ensure that they can get a few more new faces through the door in any way they can.
