Aston Villa learn if Jacob Ramsey will make debut for Newcastle at Villa Park as medical booked

Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey is set to complete an imminent move to Newcastle United.

Aston Villa will play the Magpies in their Premier League opener on Saturday, 16 August, with £27m signing Evann Guessand set to make his competitive debut.

The sale of Ramsey will mark the first significant departure from Villa Park this summer, after a £40million fee was agreed with Newcastle.

Villa will hope to replace him in the final weeks of the window, and Marco Asensio could return to the West Midlands from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ramsey unlikely to appear vs Villa

Villa had attempted to tie Ramsey down to new terms at Villa Park, but the midfielder is keen for a fresh start within the Premier League.

The 24-year-old was often left on the bench last season, with his usual position on the left of the attack filled by the superb Morgan Rogers.

Ramsey had looked to be one of Villa and England’s emerging stars, with six goals and seven assists in the 2022/23 Premier League season, placing him firmly in Gareth Southgate’s sights.

But injury issues have stalled the 24-year-old’s progress since, with Ramsey appearing in just 45 of the last 76 Premier League games.

That placed the Birmingham-born talent among the possible departures from Villa Park this summer, with the incoming £40m set to represent pure profit in Profit and Sustainability (PSR) terms.

According to Craig Hope on 14 August, Ramsey’s move is very unlikely to be finalised in time for him to play against his boyhood club on Saturday, with a medical set to take place over the next 24 hours.

His debut for Eddie Howe’s side is more likely to come against Premier League champions Liverpool on 25 August.

Ramsey fee needs to be used wisely on transfers

The £27m arrival of Guessand marked Villa’s first significant signing of the summer window.

Decision-makers at Villa Park have been struggling to contend against the PSR constraints, but Ramsey’s sale could allow some room to work with in the final weeks of the window.

The midfielder’s status as an academy product means the £40m will go down as pure profit – equivalent to gold dust in the eyes of PSR.

But, with UEFA constraints also against them, it’s looking like a tough couple of weeks for Unai Emery.
