Aston Villa fans divided as Jacob Ramsey nears Newcastle United transfer
Aston Villa have been expected to sell this summer, and that appears to be coming to fruition.
Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins have been heavily linked with a Villa Park exit and could yet depart for pastures new before the deadline.
However, it is academy product Jacob Ramsey who is first to be closing in on a major exit from the West Midlands to join Newcastle.
Given the midfielder’s strong affiliation with the Premier League side, supporters are understandably split over the news.

Aston Villa supporters have mixed feelings over Ramsey sale
Aston Villa and Newcastle United opened talks over the potential transfer of Ramsey in recent days, and the move has since accelerated.
Other than a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, the midfielder has only ever known the claret and blue of Villa, but could soon be donning the black and white stripes of the Magpies.
Ramsey is a popular figure in Unai Emery’s squad and has made 167 appearances for the West Midlands outfit, creating pure PSR profit when he leaves.
Appearances | Goals | Assists |
167 | 17 | 19 |
When he is at his best, the 24-year-old can be devastating, but it seems that his forever club are willing to let him go.
That is because Newcastle are closing in on a deal to sign Ramsey, according to Fabrizio Romano on 12 August.
He reports that an agreement is almost complete for a £40million package.
Despite West Ham’s approach, the Birmingham-born man only wants Newcastle, with a move now imminent to the Champions League club.
Villa supporters have reacted to the news, but there is a divide over whether it is good business.

Will Ramsey be a loss for Villa?
With supporters split over the sale of one of their own, they may wait to see what unfolds at St James’ Park before passing judgment.
When looking at his statistics, many would say that 36 goal contributions in 167 appearances are not good enough for a player in his position.
However, others would rightly argue that Ramsey produces more than just his numbers.
- Ramsey’s sale would represent pure PSR profit
- The money could be used to land a potential upgrade
- Supporters are unsure whether it is the correct decision
Aston Villa could replace Ramsey with Marco Asensio, who could be viewed as an upgrade on his former teammate, with his return now on the cards.
While the Villa Park faithful will not want to regret the sale of Ramsey, only time will tell if it was the right decision.
