Aston Villa to bank multi-million profit in days as Barrenechea transfer close

Enzo Barrenechea looks set for an early exit from Aston Villa this summer.

The 24-year-old only arrived at Villa Park from Juventus last summer but failed to make a single appearance before he joined Valencia on loan.

In Spain, the midfielder impressed and helped Carlos Corberan’s side avoid relegation. However, Barrenechea could now leave Aston Villa, with multiple clubs interested.

Aston Villa exclusively negotiating with Benfica for Barrenechea

Reports recently emerged that Valencia and Porto were chasing Barrenechea this summer.

However, according to A Bola (14 July), Aston Villa are only negotiating with Benfica.

The report states that Unai Emery’s side will not consider other offers for the 24-year-old until negotiations with the Reds have concluded.

The Birmingham outfit will not accept less than £10.4million for the Argentine, which would result in a £4.3m profit, after Barrenechea joined Villa for £6.1m.

Benfica are also considering including a sell-on clause to reduce the transfer fee.

An agreement is close after talks continued on Sunday (13 July). Porto have also been contacted by Barrenechea’s agent. However, Benfica see the Argentine as their top target.

Barrenechea sale sensible for Emery

Unfortunately for Barrenechea, he is unlikely to ever break into Villa’s first team.

Therefore, it is wise for Emery and Monchi to explore a potential sale of the defensive midfielder this summer. If Villa can bank a multi-million profit, as well as a sell-on clause, it would be a good deal for the Claret and Blue side.

However, a buy-back clause should also be considered, as Barrenechea clearly has plenty of potential, with him still being just 24 years old. Hopefully, a sale quickly becomes official to open up more funds for potential incomings at Villa Park this summer.
