Aston Villa at risk of ‘massive mistake’ amid Jack Grealish return latest

Aston Villa have been linked with a move to re-sign Jack Grealish ever since the transfer window opened.

Grealish has been frozen out at Manchester City and is keen to seal a transfer this summer.

A move to Villa would appear to be ideal. He’s still adored among many Villa fans, and the club are in desperate need of new attackers. In fact, Villa were recently identified as the ‘main candidates’ for his signature.

However, manager Unai Emery has been warned that signing Grealish could be a “massive mistake”.

Aston Villa warned about bringing Grealish back

It would be an expensive transfer to bring Grealish back to Villa Park, even if he has been deemed surplus to requirements at Manchester City.

Former Aston Villa striker Gerry Thompson believes that the deal wouldn’t make sense for club or player.

In a recent fan forum event set to be broadcast on BBC West Midlands, he suggested it would be better for both if Grealish went elsewhere.

He said: “Bringing him back to Aston Villa could be a massive mistake, I think he’s a great player, fantastic, but he needs a new direction and new club to go to to show what he can do. Coming back to Villa wouldn’t be the right thing for the club or for him.”

Thompson lamented the fact that Grealish had become a different player in Pep Guardiola’s system.

However, he backed the England star to show the true levels of his talent at whatever new club he chooses.

Grealish return would overshadow a poor transfer window for Aston Villa

Aston Villa fans have had to endure a mostly uneventful transfer window so far.

The club desperately needs to replace last season’s loan signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, as well as seeking upgrades in other positions. Still, they are yet to make a meaningful signing, and most of their existing players have been linked with other clubs.

They’re also at risk of losing one of their key transfer targets, Rodrigo De Paul, to MLS club Inter Miami.

The return of Jack Grealish would help to overshadow all of this bad news though. This would be seen as one of the all-time greatest Premier League homecomings, among Villa fans at least.

There’s a chance that Grealish wouldn’t recover the form that earned his £100m transfer to Manchester City, and it would be an expensive gamble for Emery to make, but many fans would be excited to see this deal done.
