Emi Martinez ‘set to stay’ at Aston Villa after Man United bombshell

Emi Martinez has been heavily linked with an Aston Villa exit this summer.

The Argentine is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in world football, winning the prestigious Yashin trophy in 2023 and 2024.

However, his days at Villa Park seemed numbered due to the Profit and Sustainability issues, and he was seen crying after the final home match of the season, leading to speculation about a departure.

Onana exit update could give Villa hope

It would have been a major blow for Unai Emery to lose Martinez, but he could be set to stay after the latest update on Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United.

A report from the Daily Mail (7 July) claims that the Cameroon star is keen to stay at Old Trafford and is expected to remain as United’s number one.

The Red Devils were the favourites to secure the World Cup winner’s signature, but if Onana is staying around, it means they will not be targeting a goalkeeper this summer.

Martinez sale is not needed at Villa now

The Villans have solved their PSR issues, so the sale of high-profile stars like Martinez, Jacob Ramsey or Morgan Rogers is not necessary now.

They sold a stake in their women’s team to V Sports in a clever move that helped them stave off the potential breach of the regulations and the punishments that would have come with it.

Therefore, they do not need to make any more concessions to achieve a solution, although UEFA’s squad cost rules may be a different issue entirely.

Still, with United keeping Onana between the sticks, that makes a deal for the B6 star very unlikely and means Martinez should be a Villa player next season.

Monchi will still have to make inspired deals in the transfer window; however, he does not need to sanction a big departure, and that will be a huge relief for supporters.

It could be a hectic few months for the Villans faithful, but it looks increasingly likely that their star man will still be between the sticks for the new campaign.
