Emi Martinez exit news emerges immediately after Aston Villa PSR bombshell

Emi Martinez has been strongly linked with a move away from Aston Villa this summer amid underlying PSR concerns.

With the deadline for clubs to submit their relevant paperwork now pretty much here, Villa have taken drastic action to balance their books.

It was announced on Monday (30 June), shortly ahead of the deadline, that V Sports are set to buy a stake in Aston Villa Women.

News that Villa were planning to sell a stake in their women’s side caused a stir, but Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris are doing what they must to comply with PSR.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden looks set to be sold by Villa which, combined with the money raised through selling a stake in the women’s side, seems to have the Villans in the clear for now.

There have been fears that at least one big-name player would have to be sold before 1 July, with Martinez‘s name mentioned more than any other.

However, Birmingham World (30 June) report that Villa are no longer worried about breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

No firesale is expected, meaning there is no immediate risk of Martinez being sold by Villa, or indeed any other big-name star moving on.

Villa comply with PSR but not out of the woods just yet

This news is of course encouraging, but there are still fears that players could be sold further down the line to comply with UEFA’s separate regulations.

Talks are ongoing with UEFA, with Villa supposedly making it clear they intend to bring down costs across the board by 20 per cent over the coming years.

The obvious question is exactly how money will be generated to bring in new faces, so sales are still likely between now and the transfer window closing.

It will make for a hectic final couple of months to the transfer window, with plenty of shrewd business being required.
