Aston Villa delighted as Morgan Rogers announcement made

Morgan Rogers enjoyed an impressive campaign at Aston Villa last time out.

The 22-year-old dazzled some of Europe’s best defenders in the Champions League and received his first England caps in the last campaign.

Now, he has received further recognition of his incredible progress over the past year.

Rogers named among candidates for PFA Young Player of the Year

Rogers has now been shortlisted in this year’s top six for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, as announced by Aston Villa in a statement on Thursday (19 June).

Rogers joins Liam Delap (previously Ipswich Town, now Chelsea), Dean Huijsen (Bournemouth, now Real Madrid), Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri (both Arsenal) as contenders for the award.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony on 19 August. Any English-based player aged 21 or younger at the start of last season could be nominated for the award.

Two Villa players have previously won the award; Ashley Young (2008-09) and James Milner (2009-10).

The news comes amid speculation that Arsenal are planning to bid for Rogers in this summer’s transfer window.

Even so, the official Aston Villa X account made a post congratulating the winger for his nomination.

“We are delighted to confirm that Morgan Rogers has been shortlisted in this year’s Top Six for PFA Young Player of the Year,” it said.

Rogers still has a big future at Aston Villa

Aston Villa are likely to resist any bids for Rogers during this summer’s transfer window.

He still has five years on his contract, having signed a new deal last November.

Plus, the Villains are already short of wingers, following the departures of loan signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio.

Key figures at Villa believe that the best is yet to come from Rogers.

Rogers may have received some criticism for his England performances in June, but that’s part and parcel of playing at the highest level.

Unai Emery signed him from Middlesbrough in last year’s January transfer window, and the Spaniard remains a huge fan.

Fans can expect Villa to be in the market for new attackers this summer, but they won’t be bought to replace Rogers. They’ll be there to support him.

In fact, the Villa faithful can expect their manager to build his team around the young winger for many years to come.
