Aston Villa defender ‘thrilled’ as Villa Park exit officially confirmed

Aston Villa fans will be hoping their club is active in this summer’s transfer window.

It’s been a slow start to the summer as far as bringing in new faces.

However, one Villa player is now confirmed to be playing his football elsewhere next season.

Josh Feeney seals season-long deal at League One club

Josh Feeney will spend the 2025-26 season on loan at Huddersfield Town after a deal was finalised on Monday (16 June).

The deal should allow the 20-year-old defender to rack up more first-team minutes.

He spent this season on loan at Shrewsbury Town, making 38 appearances in total. Before that, Feeney was loaned out to Real Union.

Now he’ll have the chance to build on that experience under Huddersfield’s new manager Lee Grant.

In an interview published on the Terriers’ official website on Monday (16 June), he said: “I am thrilled to join Huddersfield Town for the season, a club that has a positive feeling around it and ambition.”

There’s a lot of expectation around Feeney. He has been touted as the long-term replacement to Tyrone Mings.

However, he won’t be making his first-team debut for Villa next season.

Indeed, Unai Emery has reportedly been lining up moves for new defenders during this summer’s transfer window.

Axel Disasi could be the first one through the door after a successful loan spell with Villa this season. He is expected to be available for around £25million.

Big transfer window needed to seal Villa’s long-term ambitions

Aston Villa can consider themselves dreadfully unlucky not to have qualified for next season’s Champions League.

The Villains missed out on fifth place in the Premier League by goal difference, meaning they’ll play in the Europa League this season.

The higher-ups at the club have announced their desire to turn Villa into Champions League regulars. Now, they have to prove that desire is real by backing Emery in this summer’s transfer market.

Villa had a positive season overall in the Premier League

Villa are looking particularly short in attack now that Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford’s loan deals have ended, although new recruits in defence and midfield would be welcome too.

And if Emi Martinez is sold, they’ll need a new goalkeeper as well.

A busy summer is needed if Villa are going to bounce back into Europe’s top competition straight away. It’s up to the board to make sure that happens.
