Aston Villa backed to sign Everton goalkeeper with exit already in the works

Aston Villa could be set to target an Everton keeper when the transfer window opens.

The Villans are facing an uncertain situation between the sticks as the end of the season sparked a number of exit rumours in B6.

This is likely to see a number of questions be asked of Unai Emery, who is likely to have a number of big summer decisions on his hands.

One of those could be which goalkeeper he looks to bring in, with an Everton ace potentially set to become one of the first signings of the window.

Aston Villa could make goalkeeper swoop at Everton

There has been no shortage of links for a potential sale as Emi Martinez cried on the pitch after the Tottenham win in mid-May.

This has seen the Argentina international receive interest from the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Galatasaray before the opening of the window.

As a result, a new number one may be needed for the Villans, with Lille keeper Lucas Chevalier linked with a B6 switch already.

This speculation has all taken place while Robin Olsen has already confirmed an Aston Villa exit, returning to his former club Malmö at the end of his contract.

The number two keeper under Emery will leave a hole in the squad which needs filling, regardless of his frailties throughout his Villa spell.

This has seen talkSPORT journalist Dan Bardell suggest that the Villans could make a summer approach for Asmir Begovic at Everton, as opposed to utilising Joe Gauci as number two.

Writing on his Substack page (12 June), he said: Robin Olsen has moved on. Whatever your opinion of him, he was Villa’s recognised number two goalkeeper, and someone else is now likely to hear themselves proclaimed as “The World’s Number 2” next season.

“I don’t believe Joe Gauci or any of the younger keepers will be seen as ready, so I expect Villa to move for an experienced backup. At least one goalkeeper will arrive this summer, possibly two. Potential incomings: Lucas Chevalier, Asmir Begović”

Begovic could join Aston Villa from Everton

With the Villans in the Europa League for the upcoming campaign, strength in depth is going to be required in all positions.

As it stands, Martinez is the only keeper available in B6, and it is fair to say that Begovic would represent an experienced pro to boost the squad.

Asmir Begovic career stats

Sometimes, a player who has seen it all in their career is a useful asset, and the Bosnia international could prove to be an ideal option as a free transfer.

The 37-year-old has played second fiddle to Jordan Pickford at Goodison for many years and could now make a move to Villa Park in the potentially 16th move of his career.
