Aston Villa get new transfer deadline as they ready Emi Martinez replacement

Aston Villa could be set to replace Emi Martinez this summer, leaving behind years of iconic memories from the Argentine.

Villa missed out on Champions League football after a final-day defeat to Manchester United, and their transfer strategy for the summer will likely change as a result.

Martinez was sent off in the first half at Old Trafford, and the veteran goalkeeper could now be on the chopping block as Villa aim to raise funds to sort out any PSR issues.

Martinez looks likely to leave, and Villa may have the perfect replacement in mind, but there is significant competition for his signature.

Villa ready to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia

Aston Villa are now interested in signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, but there is plenty of interest in him, both in the Premier League and beyond.

Garcia has established himself as one of the best goalkeeping prospects in Europe and has arguably been the best in La Liga this season, helping keep Espanyol up in the relegation battle.

Mundo Deportivo (27 May) have now reported that Villa, as well as Newcastle, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Napoli, Leverkusen and Barcelona are all keen on Garcia.

Garcia would be perfect Martinez replacement

Garcia’s release clause stands at £21million, making him an absolute bargain for whichever team.

The Spaniard could end up becoming Villa’s starting goalkeeper for the next decade, and with Martinez suffering a decline this season, now could be the perfect time to proactively replace him.

Unai Emery and Monchi will be well aware of Garcia’s potential, given his reputation in Spain, and they could replace an ageing option with one who is only going to get better and better.

Villa have also been linked with Lucas Chevalier, and it is clear that a younger option in goal will be targeted if Martinez does depart this summer.

Big changes are coming at Villa Park.
