Aston Villa to face PSR ‘hammer blow’ as transfer update emerges at Villa Park

Aston Villa will have one eye on the summer window as financial issues look set to take hold once again.

The Villans were forced into a number of sales nearly 12 months ago as the likes of Douglas Luiz, Omari Kellyman, and Tim Iroegbunam departed.

These exits helped Monchi and Co. avoid a points deduction as a finish in the Champions League remains possible with one Premier League match remaining.

As Unai Emery prepares for an away trip to Manchester United on the final day, PSR issues could be set to take hold of his side ahead of the summer.

Aston Villa could be set for new PSR blow

It is fair to say that the sale of Luiz to Juventus and even Moussa Diaby’s move to Saudi Arabia were of great frustration to supporters.

This duo played a key role as the B6 club achieved a top-four finish but were ultimately moved on to help avoid any financial punishments.

This sort of work continued into the January window as Jhon Duran, Jaden Philogene, and Diego Carlos departed, bringing in a sizable figure for the Villans.

With that being said, missing out on Champions League qualification this season could still result in further sales as the summer window looms.

Premier League race for Champions League qualification

Ben Foster echoed this on the Football Fill-In (20 May), as he believes both Villa and Chelsea will face PSR issues if a top-five finish isn’t achieved.

He said: “Villa will be banking on it, Chelsea will be banking on it. If they both miss out on Champions League football this year, it is a hammer blow, a hammer blow to their finances, to what they can do next season, transfers, all that kind of stuff.

“At Villa, we’re already seeing links of players having to be sold because of PSR rules. If they don’t make the Champions League, it’s a major problem for Villa or Chelsea.”

Aston Villa could face points deduction for 2025/26 season

There are a number of valuable assets within the Villa squad that have helped to bring them to where they are right now.

As positive as the rise has been under Emery, there is every chance that key players could be forced out to help avoid heavy punishment.

This has most recently seen Emi Martinez be linked with an exit after being seen crying on the pitch at Villa Park after the win against Tottenham.

Ollie Watkins has also faced exit rumours despite becoming the Villans’ top Premier League scorer of all time in recent weeks.

Once again, Villa look set to be torn apart by PSR, but the chance of qualifying for the Champions League could take away from the issues ahead of the summer.
