Monchi reacts as controversial Aston Villa v Tottenham announcement revealed
Aston Villa chief Monchi has spoken out as the Premier League made a call for the upcoming clash against Tottenham.
Spurs are awaiting a Europa League semi-final second leg clash against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday (8 May) with a place in the final on the line.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are set to travel to Norway with a 3-1 aggregate lead, with a place in the showpiece in Bilbao looking highly likely.
As a result, it was little surprise that the Lilywhites wanted to move the date of their fixture at Villa Park, and it is safe to say this hasn’t gone down well with Monchi.

Monchi calls on Aston Villa fans after Tottenham announcement
The news that the Premier League have allowed the game to change date has left the B6 faithful fuming after previous events.
Ahead of the Champions League clash against PSG, requests from Villa were denied to give more rest ahead of a quarter-final tie against one of the best teams in the world.
This question was answered with a no from the league organisers, and as a result, it was little surprise to see Unai Emery’s side be knocked out.
With the Europa League final in mind, Spurs have had their request granted in what is being seen as unfair bias towards the traditional “big six”.
Regardless of this, president of football operations, Monchi, has remained level-headed in his response despite going against what the Villans wanted.
Taking to X on 6 May, he said: “The change of the fixture of Tottenham is not what we wanted. We were not entitled to keep it and we got the least damaging alternative.
“Our fans didn’t deserve but we tried hard to keep the match to protect the most important for us, you and our team. We need you on Friday. Always Up the Villa!!!
Aston Villa let down by Premier League
Many supporters feel that football is no longer for the fans, and this is just another example of this, with a fixture being moved barely two weeks in advance.
As frustrating as this will be for fans with travel and accommodation booked, it will no doubt leave co-owner Nasef Sawiris fuming.
The Egyptian has regularly spoken out against the league organisers, and once again, he would have every right to feel let down.
Villa were forced to play away from home against Southampton, just two days before the PSG clash, but Spurs are being afforded a rest before a potential final.
Date | Stadium | Result |
05/04/25 | Villa Park | Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forest |
09/04/25 | Parc Des Princes | PSG 3-1 Aston Villa |
12/04/25 | St Mary’s | Southampton 0-3 Aston Villa |
15/04/25 | Villa Park | Aston Villa 3-2 PSG |
There has been very little explanation as to why this has been pushed over the line, but regardless, it seems to show a complete lack of integrity.
One rule for one and one for another.
Monchi and Co. appear to have dealt with the decision, and as a result, fans have to and hope that the likes of Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins can step up and turn the frustration into a huge three points.
