Asensio shocker as MOTM gets 8/10 – Aston Villa player ratings v Fulham

Aston Villa secured a 1-0 win against Fulham on Saturday as Marco Asensio failed to impress once again.

The Villans have kept their hopes of a top-five finish alive with a hard-fought victory against Marco Silva’s men on 3 May.

An early header from Youri Tielemans powered home a John McGinn corner to give the home side the lead, which they managed to cling on to.

Donyell Malen came off the bench and smashed the bar with just four minutes remaining in added time before Robert Jones eventually blew the final whistle.

Unai Emery’s side eventually managed to see the game out against a 10-man Fulham side after Harrison Reed went off through injury in the second half.

Asensio quiet again for Aston Villa v Fulham

There was so much excitement surrounding the PSG loanee after his opening performances in claret and blue.

It is fair to say that has fallen away in recent weeks, kickstarting with his two penalty misses against Southampton in early April.

This has undoubtedly took a knock to his confidence, but regardless of that, Emery has continued to persist with the Spaniard in the side.

Against Fulham, this didn’t pay off as the attacking midfielder failed to have any sort of positive impact before being taken off.

By comparison, Tielemans was able to showcase his talent and find pockets of space in which to operate and dictate the game in B6.

It will be interesting to see what this performance means for the future of Asensio, especially as the summer transfer window looms at Villa Park.
