‘Ross Barkley future uncertain at Aston Villa’ as West Ham transfer update emerges

Ross Barkley could be edging nearer to an Aston Villa exit as transfer plans are drawn up at West Ham United.

The 31-year-old has had a frustrating second half of the season after picking up a lengthy injury in a clash against the Hammers in January.

In recent weeks, the Englishman has made his return off the bench with quiet showings against PSG, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.

With just three Premier League starts to speak of under Unai Emery, Barkley could now consider his future as a summer move looms in B6.

Barkley could consider Aston Villa future in summer

There is no doubt that the midfielder has proven to be a largely successful addition since his move from Luton Town in July.

This has seen the former Everton man net four goals, including some much-needed strikes against RB Leipzig and Leicester City.

Despite these positive moments, there may be concern over his injury record this season after missing so many months through a seemingly innocuous moment.

As a result, it would be little surprise if Emery and Monchi considered other options with the summer window coming up.

One midfield target that has already emerged is Lorient midfielder Arthur Avom, who has had various scouts watching him from B6 throughout the season [The Sun, 1 May].

The 20-year-old has caught the eye in Ligue 2 this campaign, with West Ham also showing an interest in the Cameroon international.

With Villa destined to play European football next season, the 2004-born ace could prioritise a move to the West Midlands, in a move that would spell bad news for Barkley.

West Ham could lose out on Avom to Aston Villa

It is fair to say that the Irons are in a rough patch of form under Graham Potter and are in need of additions ahead of the new season.

Regardless of this, there is no doubt that Villa Park would represent a more attractive prospect to join as opposed to the London Stadium.

It will be interesting to see if Avom does move on from Lorient and opts to link up with Emery, ready for a campaign in the Premier League.

If this deal did go through in B6, there is every chance that Barkley looks to engineer a move away from the Midlands in search of more regular minutes elsewhere.
