‘Lucas Digne gets it wrong’ in Aston Villa message after Crystal Palace disaster

Lucas Digne was one of the only Aston Villa players to react after the Crystal Palace defeat at Wembley.

The Frenchman started at left-back as the Villans fell to yet another humiliating defeat at the hands of Oliver Glasner on Saturday (26 April).

It is fair to say that Unai Emery’s side never showed up as an Ebere Eze strike and a Ismaila Sarr brace sealed an FA Cup final place for the Eagles.

Digne was brave enough to react when many of his teammates didn’t, but he still made an error in what he said after the defeat at the home of English football.

Digne slammed for Aston Villa v Crystal Palace statement

There was so much wrong with Villa’s performance at Wembley that fans were left enraged as the final whistle was blown.

When looking for any positives to take, the substitute appearances of Ian Maatsen and Leon Bailey were about as good as it got for the B6 outfit.

This says everything about the showing, putting an end to a frustrating run of games which has seen Villa fall out of the Champions League, FA Cup and suffer a top five blow against Manchester City.

As a result, a potentially amazing season could be set to end with very little to shout about in a devastating capitulation from Emery’s men.

Despite this, Digne took to Instagram on 27 April to suggest the Villans will go again, but his statement has generally angered fans.

He said: “It was not enough, but we will be back for sure, don’t forget from where we came. Four finals to go now.”

Suggesting that Villa fans should be grateful for a 3-0 defeat because in the past the team has been worse, has left many fans even angrier than they might have been already.

Digne makes ill-advised Aston Villa comment

The most loyal of Villa fans have been through it all in the last 10 years.

In 2015, the B6 club lost 4-0 in the FA Cup final to Arsenal before facing relegation the season after under Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde.

Fast forward to 2025, and the Villans have competed well in the Champions League and could still be on track to qualify once again.

With that being said, there is no guarantee of that happening, and now there is no chance of a trophy once again as the wait ticks towards 30 years.

Digne suggesting that Villa used to be worse than they are now doesn’t soften that blow, especially when the likes of Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers were terrible at Wembley.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Villa bounce back against Fulham on Saturday (3 May), but it is fair to say they have a lot of apologies to make that won’t necessarily be accepted.
