‘John McGinn to be delighted’ as UEFA release statement after Aston Villa v PSG

Aston Villa captain John McGinn has been included in an official UEFA statement after the aggregate defeat to PSG.

The Villans secured a hugely memorable 3-2 win in B6 on Tuesday (15 April) despite being knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and McGinn scored on the night, but it wasn’t enough as the Parisians secured a 5-4 aggregate win at Villa Park.

Regardless of the overall result, the Scotland international was on top of his game and as a result, it is little surprise to see him be included in a fresh UEFA statement.

UEFA make McGinn statement after PSG defeat

The 30-year-old has been one of, if not the best, Villa signing in their recent history after joining from Hibernian in 2018.

In the seven years that have followed, the midfielder has made 280 appearances all the way from the Championship to the Champions League.

McGinn saw his crowning glory of his Villa spell come against PSG as he netted a brilliant solo effort just ten minutes into the second half.

This ultimately changed the tide in the clash as Konsa went on to net a third two minutes later after some superb work from Marcus Rashford.

It was no more than the Scot deserved for his performance, but it did come as a surprise that he didn’t win the Man of the Match award, with Ousmane Dembele being awarded that honour.

Bizarrely, the France international hasn’t made it into UEFA’s official Team of the Week, but McGinn has alongside fellow Villa ace Konsa.

McGinn gets deserved reward for Aston Villa performance v PSG

It would be difficult to find a single Villa fan who doesn’t love McGinn for everything he has done since moving from the Scottish Premiership to B6.

No one could have imagined the impact that he would have after making the switch to a Championship side in complete turmoil.

The Scot is now the captain of a side under one of the best managers in the Premier League, Unai Emery, with the Champions League being a realistic aim for the campaign.

His strike in the clash against PSG was sensational and came just days after he grabbed his third goal of the season against Southampton at St Mary’s.

There is no doubt that he deserved a place in the Team of the Week, and it is fair to say he deserves even more recognition for his performance.
