Martinez shocking as MOTM gets 9/10 – Aston Villa player ratings v PSG

Aston Villa were eliminated from the Champions League despite a 3-2 win against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Villans faced a tough task to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg in the French Capital on 9 April but they gave it a good go.

The decision to keep Marco Asensio on the bench alongside Ollie Watkins may have caused concern but it was justified as the B6 outfit put in a great performance buoyed on by a raptuous home crowd.

The clash started off in the worst way possible for the Villa Park outfit (15 April) as the Parisians raced into a two-goal lead to increase their aggregate advantage to 5-2 on the night.

However, Unai Emery‘s side got back into the contest before the break through Youri Tielemans and they started the second-half perfectly with strikes from John McGinn and Ezri Konsa but could not get the last goal that they needed to take it to extra time.

Here, Villa News rates the players out of 10 after a valiant effort against top-class opposition.

McGinn is a consistent performer for the Villans and it was no different on this occasion against the highest calibre opponents.

The Scotland international showed his Champions League pedigree as he created one chance, took three touches in the opposition box and made four passes into the final third. [Fotmob]

He also contributed defensively, making six recoveries and winning four of the 11 duels that he attempted for a 36 per cent success rate.

Most importantly, he assisted the first and then notched the leveller than gave the Villa Park faithful the hope that they could get the job done and raised the decibel levels by a considerable margin.

He was replaced with just under 25 minutes left to play and his impact was missed as Villa failed to get the goal that they needed to take the tie to extra time.
