Aston Villa fans buzzing as Jed Steer haunts Birmingham City at Wembley

Aston Villa enjoyed the services of goalkeeper Jed Steer from 2013-2023, albeit he endured several loan spells away from the West Midlands.

While he was a Villa player, the shot-stopper went on loan to several EFL clubs, including Huddersfield, Charlton, and Luton.

But Steer went on to ply his trade for the Villa Park side in the Championship and the Premier League and now plays for Peterborough in League One.

The 32-year-old’s most notable contribution to the West Midlands giants came in 2019, when he helped them beat Derby in the Championship playoff final.

Villa fans love it as Steer beats Birmingham at Wembley

Steer successfully maintained a clean sheet as Peterborough beat Villa’s bitter rivals, Birmingham, 2-0 in Sunday’s EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

The Villa Park faithful loved their former goalkeeper’s performance against Blues at the national stadium, with one supporter posting on X: “Jed Steer. Once a Villan, always a Villan.”

Another fan of Unai Emery’s men wrote: “Jed Steer, the cult hero.”

Villa’s next four games are vital

After landing a Champions League spot last season, Emery’s men are enjoying yet another successful campaign this time around and sit seventh in the Premier League after Saturday’s 3-0 win at Southampton.

Villa have been on strong form

Crucially, Emery’s side are just one point behind fifth-place Manchester City with six games still left to go in the top-flight season.

Finishing in the top five would be enough for Villa to clinch Champions League football once more, after Arsenal’s 3-0 triumph over Madrid sufficiently boosted England’s UEFA coefficient rating.

But Emery and Co still have their sights on causing a shock by winning the Champions League and are vying to bounce back from Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.

Villa lock horns with PSG on home soil on 15 April and will look to overturn their two-goal deficit to reach the last four.

Emery’s men also clash with fellow top-five chasers Newcastle and Man City in the Premier League this month before their FA Cup semi-final tie with Crystal Palace.

As for Birmingham, they are still celebrating promotion to the Championship, there are levels to this.
