Merson loses mind over ‘unbelievable’ PSG v Aston Villa scenes – ‘This is unreal’

Aston Villa lost 3-1 to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League on Wednesday, and Paul Merson was left stunned after Morgan Rogers scored.

Luis Enrique’s team welcomed Villa home on 9 April, and the hosts found themselves behind in the 35th minute of the quarter-finals’ first leg.

John McGinn’s interception at Parc des Princes started a counter for the Lions, which Rogers converted.

PSG made a brilliant comeback as they dominated the proceedings after going behind, with Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Nuno Mendes scoring, but Emery’s team were flying high at one point.

Villa make Merson lose mind after scoring against PSG

Merson was left amazed as the Vilans took the lead against PSG away from home in the Champions League.

The Sky Sports pundit can’t comprehend the season the Lions are having and was baffled after Rogers found the back of the net.

Merson praised the visitors for causing the Ligue 1 outfit issues in the first half and looking defensively resolute before things eventually fell apart.

Speaking on Sky Sports News’ X (9 April), the former Arsenal forward said: “Wow. What a season Villa are having. Unbelievable. This is unreal. They’ve been so comfortable, Villa defending in the last 20 minutes, they haven’t caused them a problem at all PSG. Not a problem. And they’re 1-0 up.”

Emery disappointed with manner of PSG loss

Emery’s decision to take off Matty Cash after the break massively backfired as Axel Disasi struggled to cope with Kvaratskhelia’s threat.

PSG dominated the Villans in the second half, and the visitors didn’t have an answer for them as they continued to create chances.

Enrique’s team eventually scored the third at Parc des Princes, which will arguably be a massive blow for the Lions.

Emery will undoubtedly be fuming with his players for switching off in the final minutes of the game and allowing Mendes to score in stoppage time.

While the Villans already had a mountain to climb with a one-goal deficit going into the second leg, it will be even more challenging for them now.

PSG will travel to England on 15 April, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see many giving up on Emery’s team’s hopes of making the semi-finals.

The Lions have a challenging task up ahead, and the likes of Marcus Rashford will need to step up at Villa Park if they want to get past the French club.

It will be interesting to see how the second leg pans out.
